If like me you are a fan of dirty dub step and UK funky house, you need to get familiar with the Urban Nerds. Throw some fidget house in there and a splash of bashment and jungle vibes, and you’re on your way to describing the grimey baselines showcased by one of the Nerds residents, DJ Klose One. His fan base is steadily growing: 2009 appearances have included Austria, Germany, Denmark, and Ibiza, where Klose One was fortunate enough to jam at Eden and Ibiza Rocks with the likes of Bigger Than Barry at Reclaim The Dancefloor. He is also set to appear in Iceland and Croatia this month.

Klose One developed his passion for DJing from a young age, becoming obsessed with CDs like Pete Tong’s Essential selection and Ministry of Sound’s Annuals. After purchasing the cheapest turntables he could find and a plethora of records, he got a gig on pirate station Y2K, as well appearances on some club nights. Itch FM would follow and then station to station until he met the Urban Nerds. That was two years ago, and the disc-scratcher hasn’t looked back since then. DJ Rattus Rattus would become his first DJ partnership, the pair incorporating four decks into their sets. Later Illman joined the mix, and Urban Nerd promoters loved their sound so much that they became their residents.
Freedom of sound is important to this interviewee; “I play anything I like, and I think will go down well with the crowd”, he clarifies. “I am not much about breaking new music but about rocking the party and pulling off interesting mixes”. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t take the time to sample the range of tunes sent to him by artists and labels, but like every wicked DJ knows, it’s all about keeping your ear to what’s going on – be it on the radio or even in blogs like these.
Klose One has a natural knack for choosing and mixing dope basslines, and his musical philosophy is inspiring. Choosing to focus on continuing to hone his DJing skills, he remarks that he has not ventured into production as he believes that, “the numbers of producer-DJs are resulting in people forgetting what the art of DJing is all about”. I think that’s a sentiment that hardcore ravers all over the world can empathise with, but from personal experience, there’s no getting bored when the Nerds are in town.
Urban Nerds’ next big party is a carnival warm-up at a Shoredicth secret warehouse and will be huge with sets from MJ Cole, Zinc, Mampi Swift, Mumdance and Jammer and a whole heap more. Apart from that look out for Klose One, Rattus Rattus and Illaman touring around the country and Europe waving the Urban Nerds flag!
