The Knife

This ethereal video by Swedish director John Renck emulates the beauty of rural life. Being shocked by something, but enthralled by the exoticism of the unknown is a feeling so familiar. Growing up in the darkness of Warwickshire and Dorset this was a daily occurrence. Suddenly out of nowhere would come creatures from the city, with fast cars and strange clothes. Or one of my parents’ strange spiritual friends, who would come from further afield, talk strangely and get stared at in pubs.

I’ve always been a bit scared of men dressing up as women, from an early age. I remember having to make a very quick exit to the park while my family sat on watching Mrs. Doubt Fire. It’s the equivalent of watching a horror, I didn’t really understand the concept of a man who’s actually a woman, it felt strangely deceptive.

Now I think they are one of the most beautiful things. Drag queens can be even more beautiful than women, and this Knife video is so delicately shot by Renck.

I found this video on a new online community that should be known about…the online music collective in question is Vessel. Started by Kit Grill, it now has hundreds of collaborators, including an outstanding live set by Rone, paintings and mixes by Max Mclaughlin, publishing from Rollo Press, graphics from Chris Dent and Jack Featherstone.

This is a worldwide community, from New York to Zurich to London, bringing together news, videos, and exclusive mixes by artists. Come join the party.
